The Problem
Limited space, limited budget, 2, 3 or 4 level
lift access.
The Company
The Rohm & Haas factory site in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, had traditionally used high lift forklift trucks to transfer loads between levels within its process plant, which manufactures chemicals used in the production of paints and industrial coatings.
A new goods lift was required but space was at a premium and excavating a traditional lift pit was not possible. A major issue was that the entire site is a designated hazardous explosion risk area and the lift installation had to comply with ATEX standard, Zone 2, Gas Group 11B, Temperature T3 Category 3 requirements.
The Solution
Working with the consultants PDZ Project Engineering Ltd, Saxon design engineers proposed the installation of a new telescopic hydraulic mast driven goods lift, that fully complied with the stringent ATEX requirements. The electro motor pump driven hydraulics and the controller were sited 20 metres remote from the lift position, in a non hazardous area.
The oil tank was bunded and frost protected with a thermostat controlled heater. An insulated armoured hose delivers hydraulic oil to the lift cylinder at 100 Bar pressure. The electical supply was via a 10 core armoured cable supplying the 24 Volt system from the zenner barrier protected. IP65 control panel in the plant room.
The free standing self supporting fully clad lift shaft is surface mounted and manufactured from a heavy duty steel framework with the external formed panels finish painted, complete with flush faced manually operated electro-mechanically interlocked landing doors.
The direct acting telescopic hydraulic lift cylinder is fitted to a robust
vertical guidance system incorporating a "rucksack" designed sling to suspend the lift platform, negating the need for a pit.
The lift capacity is 2,000Kg and travels 4.3 metres between levels at 100 mm/sec rated for continuous use.
